Remnant Recap
What Happened: Christian author Philip Yancey admitted he carried on an eight year affair while married, revealing the confession in a letter to Christianity Today.
Why It Matters: Yancey previously criticized evangelical Christians for supporting President Trump, citing moral concerns.
Bottom Line: The revelation has sparked backlash over hypocrisy and accountability among prominent Christian voices.
The mask has come off, and the hypocrisy is hard to ignore.
Renowned Christian author Philip Yancey has admitted to cheating on his wife of more than 55 years, confessing that he carried on an affair for eight years. The confession was made in a letter sent to Christianity Today, a publication known for its sharp opposition to President Trump and conservative evangelicals.
“I confess that for eight years I willfully engaged in a sinful affair with a married woman,” Yancey wrote.
Eight years. Not a moment of weakness. Not a stumble. Eight years of deliberate sin.
This revelation lands with particular weight given Yancey’s past public scolding of evangelical Christians. In 2016, Yancey said he was “staggered” that believers would support Donald Trump, citing Trump’s moral failings and accusing him of being unfaithful to his marriage vows.
The irony is painful.
While Yancey positioned himself as a moral authority lecturing millions of believers about righteousness and political purity, he was living a double life behind the scenes. He condemned others loudly while hiding sin quietly.
To be clear, Scripture teaches forgiveness, repentance, and redemption. No Christian should celebrate another person’s failure. But Scripture also teaches accountability, humility, and truth. Those who publicly rebuke others carry an even heavier responsibility to walk in integrity themselves.
This moment should serve as a sober reminder. Celebrity Christianity is not Christianity. Moral grandstanding is not holiness. And attacking faithful believers while excusing private sin corrodes trust in the church.
Grace is available to Yancey, just as it is to all who truly repent. But the lesson remains. Truth has a way of coming into the light. And no amount of self-righteous commentary can keep it hidden forever.
