Patriot Brief
What Happened: President Donald Trump ended all federal funding for research using aborted baby parts through the National Institutes of Health.
Why It Matters: The move immediately halts taxpayer support for research many Americans consider morally unacceptable.
Bottom Line: The Trump administration is restoring ethical limits to federal science and delivering a major win for the pro-life movement.
President Donald Trump just drew a hard moral line, and pro-life Americans finally have something to cheer. The Trump administration has officially ended all federal funding for research involving aborted baby parts, cutting off taxpayer dollars effective immediately.
The announcement came from the National Institutes of Health, which confirmed the ban applies to all NIH grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and its own internal research programs. Under the new policy, research using tissue from elective abortions is prohibited, while ethically sourced tissue from miscarriages remains allowed with donor consent.
NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya made the administration’s position unmistakably clear. “NIH is pushing American biomedical science into the 21st century,” Bhattacharya said. He added that taxpayer-funded research must reflect both scientific progress and “the values of the American people.”
Bhattacharya did not shy away from the moral reality. “Now that there is better technology, there’s no scientific harm to this,” he said. “We’re still going to be able to use the science we need … while at the same time getting rid of this use of aborted fetal tissue which so many people, including me, find morally abhorrent.”
The policy reverses actions taken under Biden, who reopened the funding pipeline after Trump shut it down during his first term. Only 77 NIH projects relied on aborted baby parts in fiscal year 2024, a number that has steadily declined as better alternatives emerged.
America can advance science without sacrificing its soul. The announcement landed just ahead of the March for Life, and the timing could not be more fitting. This is a line worth drawing, and Trump drew it.
